OOC: Follows this.
Parenthood.
It wasn't something anyone with any sense went into lightly, whether it was planned or accidental. There really wasn't any more important responsibility in the world, Scott supposed, than making yourself someone's mother or father. There were endless and unexpected and serious consequences hanging on the little decisions that all surrounded that one big choice. And that was true of anyone, let alone people who lived in a world like the one Scott and Emma inhabited.
Deep down, Scott didn't think-- and he definitely hoped-- that he wasn't and hadn't been a bad father. He'd gotten a lot more practice at it with Nathan, but there had been a fair share of parental moments with Rachel, Mike and even the Stepfords. All in all, he was reasonably sure he'd learned a lot from all of those opportunities and stood a good chance of putting that knowledge to effective use with a child.
But he didn't want to fool himself, either. If for some reason Emma had other plans, then he was going to be right there with her.
"I don't know," she replied honestly to Scott as she was taken aback by his calm, quiet attitude toward the entire situation. "I don't know what the bloody hell I'm supposed to be doing right now. This baby was created because I heard about Jean-Paul and the others trying to protest Proposition X. Within fifteen minutes of making my choice, the Phoenix... created..." Her hands went to her belly. "I'm a poor choice for a mother; take a look at how my girls turned out," she added wryly, not mentioning that thoughts of Jean Grey were dancing around her head.

264 - "The past is never dead. It's not even past." William Faulkner, Requiem for a Nun.
Every now and then, a topic rolls around that is sure to make anyone who knows me and my family either chuckle or roll their eyes. This is one of those topics, which usually have something to do with family complications or time and the future. In this case, it has to do with all of the above.
The trick of the thing is that for so many people on my family tree, one person's past is another one's future, so that whole "not even past" part of the quote isn't just a fine play on words, it's a literal truth.

( For Greg & Jackson House )
Hank is also sent an envelope stuffed with gift cards to be distributed out amongst the rest of the staff and the students.
Emma's gift, naturally, is handed to her.
( For Emma )
Lastly, he sends a bouquet of red and gold flowers to Rachel, without a note or card. Scott knows he's chickening out, but since he once again can't figure out what would be right to say, he doesn't say anything.

TM 149 - Ancestors
Nov. 3rd, 2006 10:36 am149 - What do your ancestors mean to you?
Most people pull out the family tree and add new entries and branches every few years as Cousin Whoever has her second kid or Uncle Whatshisname gets remarried. Me, I've been able to do a pretty good job of filling out the next few generations' worth of slots all in the last few years.
One of the great headaches of being an X-Man, and especially of being me: I think only mythological pantheons have more confusing family trees.
( I'm going to need a lot of paper )
